Southern CA is a great place for families b/c of all the kid friendly attractions. You can take them to the theme parks in Orange County and LA; Universal Studios, Knotts Berry Farm, Disneyland, and there are several water parks. Drive down to San Diego and take them to Legoland, the San Diego Zoo, SD Wild Animal Park, and SeaWorld. Also there are great beaches and many things to do in San Diego. Besides all the themparks there are great beaches, boardwalks, and just tons of places to visit all over Southern CA all within about a two hour drive of each other.

I might go to the beach for now and save other places that are more expensive for when the 2 year old is a little older. He's just going to get tired during the day... just my thoughts.

Besides Disney World, and Zoos, the museums now have spend the night things all around the country. And I just got back from Williamsburg,VA ... and there were a lot of families experiencing the Revolutionary War Experience... however, I would definatly wait until they were older. At least 10.

It depends on where you are located and how far you are willing to travel. A very good family vacation is Schlitterbahn Waterpark in New Braunfels Texas. There is an outlet mall not too far from there in San Marcos, and you are close to major cities, without dealing with tradffic. There are glass bottom boat rides, etc. Lots of family fun, and not as pricy as Disney.
